Shanghai Women's College, the country's first community college that is exclusively forwomen, is planning to offer courses in more parts of the city.
The college was established by the Shanghai Women's Federation and ShanghaiMunicipal Education Commission earlier this year, and aims to give womenopportunities to learn throughout their lives. The city's development plan for the years2011 to 2015 also calls for improving the quality of life of female residents.
The college does not provide degree programs, concentrating instead on givingstudents training in vocational skills. It has more than 100 courses, offering instructionin subjects such as etiquette, tea ceremonies, flower arranging, cosmetics, Chinesecomposition, photography and child rearing.
To accommodate working women, who often have busy schedules, the courses will beoffered on weekday evenings and weekends. Local women can now take the courses inthe city's eight districts and other training centers are to be established in more localcommunities.
To date, more than 10,000 women residents have received training courses from thecollege's learning centers, according to the college.
Local authorities said women now make up 42 percent of Shanghai's workforce, andmore than 33 percent of the city's managerial positions are held by women.
A survey completed by the Shanghai Women's Federation and East China University ofScience and Technology this year sampled the opinions of 2,800 female residents ofthe city and found that about 66.5 percent of them want to take non-academic coursesto improve themselves.
